49ers Raced Raiders to Land Kaepernick

Just how much did the San Francisco 49ers want Colin Kaepernick? Enough to trade up into the first round to land the Nevada quarterback.

The 49ers ended trading up nine spots in the second round to draft Kaepernick. But NFL.com reports that Trent Baalke tried to trade into the last part of the first round of the draft to draft the team's quarterback of the future.

Reports were the Oakland Raiders were trying to trade up to draft Kaepernick and the Washington Redskins were believed to be interested in taking him at pick No. 41.

The 49ers had the No. 45 pick in the second round but traded that pick and 108 and 141 to get Kaepernick at spot No. 36.

Was there any thoughts of the 49ers trying to trade up one more pick and draft Andy Dalton? No, according to former 49ers' quarterback and current ESPN commentator Trent Dilfer.

He says the 49ers were locked on Kaepernick as the team's future leader before the draft started.
