6 People, 3 Dogs Displaced by 2-Alarm Oakland Fire That Burned 2 Homes

A two-alarm fire that burned through two homes in East Oakland displaced six people and three dogs Saturday afternoon, a battalion chief said.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire in the 1200 block of 76th Avenue around 2:30 p.m., fire Battalion Chief Darin White said.

The fire was reported by an Alameda County sheriff's deputy who saw a plume of smoke while driving on 73rd Avenue and drove to 76th Avenue where he found the blaze, White said.

Fire crews arrived to find the fire burning through two single-story homes and a second alarm was called, he said.

The blaze was under control by about 3:15 p.m., a fire dispatcher said.

The fire appears to have started at the rear of one of the homes, he said.

The American Red Cross was called to assist four adults, two children and three dogs displaced by the fire, White said.

No injuries were reported.

White estimated the fire caused an estimated $100,000 to $200,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
