$7 to Cross GG Bridge? A Possibility in 2013

A proposal to raise the toll to cross the Golden Gate Bridge to $7 in July 2013 is on the table.

No vote has yet been held on the proposal by the board members of the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, according to the Marin Independent Journal, but it's one of the solutions that bridge officials may pursue as they figure out ways to pay for the $175 million bill for seismic retrofit work as well as the Doyle Drive connector.

Bridge officials have scrimped and saved for years to close bridge deficits, with more measures -- such as the elimination of paid toll-workers on the bridge and the installation of toll-collecting machines only -- scheduled to come over the next few years. The toll increase could be next, but it won't be considered until the end of next month by the bridge board, according to a spokeswoman.
