A Hayward man will break ground on a 9/11 monument Friday, near the old City Hall building.

Marine Corps veteran Michael Emerson designed the memorial which will feature four granite monoliths to represent the planes involved in the crash.

The monument, on 22738 Mission Boulevard, will also honor victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.

This is not Emerson’s first time building a 9/11 memorial. He helped produce the Flight 98 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
