Alameda Police Investigating Rash of ‘Hot Prowl' Burglaries and Related Sexual Assault

Alameda police on Monday released surveillance images of a man wanted in connection to a recent rash of burglaries and a related sexual assault on a girl.

Police are investigating six different so-called "hot prowl" burglaries. A hot prowl burglary is when someone breaks in while people are home, police said.

The attacks were reported during the late-night or early-morning hours between June 16 and August 9. All crimes occurred in the west end of Alameda.

"This is something I take personal," said Alameda Police Lt. Ron Simmons, who also serves as the watch commander for the west side of town. "This is the real reason why we become police officers -- to stop bad guys doing this stuff."

The most recent incident was reported on Sunday, when a parent called police and said her daughter was a victim of an assault while her child was sleeping in her bedroom, officials said.

Police said the man gained access to the home by an open bedroom window after he cut the screen.

Uniform and plain-clothed officers are increasing patrols in the west end of Alameda in response to the crimes, according to police.

Resident Anna Bagtas, who has a 2-year-old child, is on high alert after getting word of the recent crimes.

"Alameda is a very safe place, but something like that is scary," Bagtas said. "We have to work together as a neighborhood."

The person of interest is described as a male, 18 years or older, 150 pounds, with a haircut that is curly on top and short on the sides.

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the person of interest and are reminding residents to close and lock all doors and windows.
