All-Clear Given After Suspicious Package Reported at Philip Burton Federal Building in San Francisco

A suspicious package was reported at the Philip Burton Federal Building in San Francisco Tuesday afternoon but was deemed a non-threat about an hour later, an FBI spokeswoman said.

The suspicious package was reported at 12:20 p.m. in a basement area of the building at 450 Golden Gate Ave., which houses federal courthouses, an FBI office and other federal agencies, FBI spokeswoman Michele Ernst said.

A San Francisco police bomb squad responded and investigators determined by about 1:20 p.m. that the package posed no threat, so the all-clear was given, Ernst said.

The Golden Gate Avenue entrance to the building was briefly closed during the investigation, but the Turk Street entrance remained open and no other major building operations were affected, she said.

Ernst said the incident serves as "an important reminder that if you see something, say something."

"There's no shame in reporting something suspicious, even if it turns out to be a non-threat," she said.
