Alleged Gang Member Stabbed After Starting Fight Near Fremont High School

An alleged gang member was stabbed in a Fremont high school parking lot Wednesday night but appears to have started the fight, a police spokeswoman said today.

The 23-year-old Fremont man, who police said is a known Norteno gang member, confronted another man who he said was a member of an opposing gang at about 9:30 p.m. near the softball field at American High School at 36300 Fremont Blvd., police Officer Geneva Bosques said.

He punched the other man in the face, provoking the man to pull out a knife and stab the 23-year-old in the leg, Bosques said.

The stabber took off running before police arrived. The man with the stab wound was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not considered life-threatening.

He is being treated as both a suspect and victim in the case and has refused to cooperate with police, Bosques said.

The man who fled was described as a Hispanic man wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and light-colored shoes, Bosques said. He has not been found.
