Need for Broadband Speed: Austin Tops SF

Report: Austin, SF, New York and Seattle lead the download pack.

Pando Networks' research shows Austin is the fastest gun download in the West, having researched more than 10 million sample downloads, according to TechCrunch.

Tech hot spots top the overall list, of course, but getting smoked by Austin may lead to some friendly competition among competition. Notably, San Jose is on the list at no. 12 -- but they're addressing the situation with free Wi-Fi for all of downtown.

Austin came in first with 841 KBps, Pando reports. San Francisco came in at 828 KBps, Boston at 827 KBps, Seattle at 805 KBps, and New York at 787 KBPs.

The low-end of the broadband scale was also in Texas: El Paso came in last with 483 KBps (it must sorta suck to game there, right?). Other slowpoke towns include Forth Worth (517 KBps), Oklahoma City (518 KBps), Albuquerque (537 KBps) and Denver (550 KBps).

Pando's services fit with the study: they provide big-file-download services to consumers and businesses. "Game companies contract with Pando to have their games distribute" as TechCrunch's Sarah Perez writes.

Notably, Comcast had the highest download speeds at 941 KBps, followed by Optimum at 874 KBps. (Disclosure: Comcast owns NBC and, thus, this website,)
