Bay Area Rapid Transit police officers may each get their own stun gun instead of having to check the devices out of a common pool.

The train agency's board on Thursday is set to consider spending up to $141,000 to buy 130 additional stun guns.

BART officials say officers' familiarity and confidence in the devices increases when they are each assigned one.

The Contra Costa Times reports that the change was recommended by BART's outside consultants following the fatal 2009 New Year's Day shooting of Oscar Grant by then BART police officer Johannes
     Mehserle.

Grant, who was shot on a train station platform, was unarmed.

Mehserle said he thought he was firing his stun gun.
