New Year's Day

Bad Start to the New Year for 9 Morgan Hill Residents Whose Car Tires were Slashed

For a few in the South Bay, 2016 came with a hiss, not a bang.

Nine Morgan Hill residents discovered 14 deflated car tires Friday after someone apparently slashed them with a knife. Some found that two tires on the same car had been ruined – an estimated $400 loss.

City police are investigating the vandalism, which took place in a parking lot at the Murphy Ranch townhomes off East Dunne Avenue.

Hugo Herrera said someone slashed his truck’s tire sometime after midnight.

"I came out to find out I had a flat tire," he lamented.

Some people were able to swap out their deflated tires with spares. But Herrera, who said his mechanic was unavailable due to the holiday, was forced to spend the first day of the new year at home.

"I have to wait because everything is closed," he said. "I was going to take my kids out to the movies but now, because of this, we have to stay home."

Police say the complex's parking lot is outfitted with security cameras. They hope the footage will help them nab the culprit.
