Bay Area Swimmers Raking in the Hardware in Rio

Stanford's Katie Ledecky, Cal's Nathan Adrian and Dana Vollmer taking Brazil by storm

After just two full days of competition, Bay Area athletes were already stocking up on the hardware at the Rio Games.

While all eyes were on Michael Phelps chasing after his record 19th gold medal in the men's 4x100-meter freestyle relay, Cal graduate Nathan Adrian secured that medal, swimming the anchor leg as the U.S. reclaimed the top position on the podium that slipped away to France four years ago in London.

Meanwhile, Stanford freshman Katie Ledecky dominated the 400 free with a world-record perfomance. She was so fast, she could be seen celebrating while everyone else was still swimming.

"I was really confident after this morning, and I wanted to get 3:56, so I did check," Ledecky said.

Cal grad and new mom Dana Vollmer added to the U.S. medal count with a bronze in the 100 butterfly.

"Iā€™m so happy with it, its amazing," Vollmer said. "I just wanted to medal, and I did so I'm extremely happy with that."

It was Vollmer's second medal in Rio after she won a silver in the women's 100 freestlye relay.
