Bay Area Biggest City Joins Boycott Debate

San Jose is considering whether to join other California cities in boycotting Arizona over the state's tough new law targeting illegal immigration.

The proposal is due to be debated during a City Council session this week.

Backers on the council insist that it's important to send a message that the city doesn't condone the pending Arizona law that requires police enforcing other laws to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are in the country illegally.

But boycott opponents say it's unfair to punish businesses for politicians' actions and that the city should be concentrating on solving its budget problems, not other states' laws.

Los Angeles, Oakland and San Francisco and other cities have passed boycotts, as has Los Angeles County.
