While people around the United States celebrate the July 4 holiday, firefighters and first-responders will be hard at work.

Firefighters warn revelers to not only be careful at fireworks shows, but also to only buy legal fireworks that are referred to as Safe and Sane. That means sparklers, snaps and smoke balls are permitted, but fireworks with aerial effects, such as firecrackers and roman candles, are not.

People caught in possession of illegal fireworks could face penalties, including jail time. San Jose police recently confiscated more than 2,700 pounds of illegal fireworks from people, who they believe planned to sell them.

Here's a full list of cities where Safe and Sane fireworks are permitted:

    • San Bruno
    • Pacifica
    • Union City
    • Newark
    • Dublin
    • Gilroy
    • Petaluma
    • Sebastopol
    • Rohnert Park
    • Cloverdale
