Bay Area Is Not the Planet of the Apes

If one knew nothing about the Bay Area except what they say in "The Rise of the Planet of the Apes," they would think of lot of apes live here.

But apparently James Franco's days in Palo Alto were little help to the movie's creators. In one of the movie's climactic scenes involves Caesar the monkey rallying his primate friends to gather all the apes living in the Bay Area and head across the Golden Gate Bridge.

The scene was so powerful it got the folks at Slate.com thinking: How many apes are there in the Bay Area?

It turns out there actually are not that many. Maybe about 25.

The online magazine tallied up the number of apes living at both the San Francisco and Oakland zoos and then there is Koko the gorilla and her parnet, Ndume, who both live in Woodside.

Slate took into account "gibbons, orangutans, gorillas, chimps, and bonobo" in its study.
