Political and social leaders in the Bay Area had mixed reaction to President Donald Trump's decision to pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate change accord.
Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, who was among 12 mayors invited to take part in the 2015 Paris Climate Summit, said she's disappointed and angry.
"Our president has broken a promise to the world and walked away from the most pressing issue of our time," Schaaf said. "Believe me, what this president is going to fail to do, we will do."
Schaaf joined 66 mayors across the country Thursday, pledging to adopt the goals of the Paris pact despite Trump's action. The director of the San Francisco Bay Chapter of the Sierra Club also says the organization is ready to double down on its efforts to stem global warming.
"For every step backward the country is taking, the Bay Area and Sierra Club (are) really pushing for renewable energy's future," Minda Berbeco said.
Not everyone is upset by Trump's decision. The former chair of the California Republican Party and current board member applauded the president.
"This is long overdue," Tom Del Beccaro said. "In the long term, the Paris pact would have led to more pollution, not less, because it would have driven jobs to India and China, who are the world's worst producers."

Business leaders also were disappointed with the decision. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stepped down from his post on Trump's advisory council.
