Bay Area's High-Surf Advisory Extended: Weather Service

A high-surf advisory that was due to expire at 6 p.m. Wednesday has been extended until 11 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The waves won't be at the same 20-foot heights that surfaced earlier Wednesday and Tuesday, but the weather service indicated large westerly swells from 15 to 18 feet with periods of 17-18 seconds continuing into Wednesday evening before subsiding below 15 feet overnight.

The high-surf advisory is in effect in coastal areas for Sonoma, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.

Weather officials reiterated warnings to beach goers and fishermen about sneaker waves that can pull unsuspecting people into the water and strong rip currents that can pull them underwater or out to sea.
