Berkeley Elementary School Teacher in Critical Condition After Being Shot in Face

A shooting in Richmond on Saturday that left an elementary school teacher in Berkeley in critical condition has "deeply pained" the woman's students and colleagues, school district officials said Tuesday.

Claire Dugan, 52, of Berkeley, was the victim of a shooting that police officers responded to at 6:10 p.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of Cutting Boulevard.

Dugan had been struck by gunfire as she was driving, causing her vehicle to collide with another vehicle, police said. She was taken to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Dugan is a fourth-grade teacher at Cragmont Elementary School in Berkeley, according to the school's website.

Berkeley Unified School District acknowledged that she was a victim in the recent shooting, and that the incident is troubling to her students and colleagues.

"Our school community is deeply pained by the senseless shooting of (Dugan), a dedicated, generous teacher, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family," school district officials said in a statement.

The school district will utilize the city's mental health resources to ensure "the well being of students and staff at her school," district officials said.

Witnesses told police they saw a male running south on South 22nd Street following Saturday's shooting. An update on the search for that person was not immediately available from police.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Richmond police detectives at (510) 620 6541 or (510) 621-1755.
