Better View for Mavericks Watchers

Scenic bluff open to the public.

San Mateo County has turned a scenic bluff near Moss Beach into public land.

The county purchased the 140-acre Pillar Point Bluff from the Peninsula Open Space Trust for $3 million this month. The trust announced the sale on Monday.

The grass-covered bluff includes a three-mile trail that runs from Seal Cove near the entrance to the state's James V. Fitzgerald Marine Reserve to a southern overlook where hikers can see the Mavericks surf break. The trust acquired the land in pieces between 2004 and 2008.

The San Mateo County Times reports that the money for the purchase came from the state Wildlife Conservation Board.
