Bicyclist Killed, Two Injured in Contra Costa County Crash

One person killed in a collision in Contra Costa County this morning was part of a large group of bicyclists traveling in the area, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.

Officers responded to a report of a collision between a vehicle and bicyclist on eastbound Highland Road about three-quarters of a mile west of Carneal Road around 9:45 a.m., CHP Sgt. Diana McDermott said.

The collision occurred in an area east of San Ramon and north of Livermore.

The bicyclist killed in the collision was part of a group of about 50 to 60 people cycling through the area, McDermott said.

The bicyclist was traveling at the back of the pack and made an "evasive action" due to a collision at the front of the group, she said.

The cyclist was then ejected from the bicycle and hit a truck, according to McDermott.

The Contra Costa County coroner's office was called to the scene, according to the CHP.

Another person suffered major injuries and a third individual suffered minor injuries, CHP officials said.

McDermott did not have any additional information on the deceased and injured this afternoon.
