1 Dead in Downtown San Jose Parking Garage Crash, Fire

One person is dead after a car struck a pillar in a parking garage in downtown San Jose Monday morning, sparking a fire that spread to multiple other vehicles, a fire captain said.

The blaze was reported about 9:15 a.m. at a parking structure in the 100 block of West Hedding Street, near Santa Clara County Superior Courthouse and Main Jail, according to San Jose Fire Department officials.

Firefighters located one person who died in the fire, according to a post on the fire department's Twitter page. The car, a light-colored sedan, was found burned on the second floor of the garage. Firefighters tweeted an image showing bright orange flames shooting out from the bottom of the car.

The victim may have suffered a medical emergency before his or her car struck  a garage pillar and burst into flames, firefighters said.

Several other vehicles were also damaged nearby; one had a trunk busted open, and others showed melted tires.

Crews had knocked down the blaze but remained on the scene as of shortly before 10 a.m.

San Jose arson investigators were called to the scene.
