Borders Closing 3 More Bay Area Stores

As Borders tries to navigate through bankruptcy, the chain bookstore announced Friday that it will be closing 28 more stores than initially thought.

Borders filed for bankruptcy protection in February and said it would be closing 12 of its Bay Area stores. Three more local stores were added to the list Friday.

The Borders stores in Pleasant Hill, San Rafael and Milpitas will also get the ax.

The store that was infamous for putting mom and pop stores out of business announced it will close 200 stores nationwide to deal with debt and the company's failure to compete with eBooks.

But now the 40-year-old bookseller is trying desperately to plug daily losses of $2 million.

Twelve of the initial 200 stores slated for closure are in the Bay Area. Included on the list are Borders' Union Square store in San Francisco, its Santana Row store and its store on Blossom Hill Road in San Jose.

Borders plans to close the stores over the next several weeks.
