An aide to Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer has been arrested on charges that he brought marijuana into a Senate office building.

Boxer's office has confirmed that the senator has accepted the aid's resignation.

The website Politico.com was first to report that Marcus Stanley was arrested and charged with trying to bring marijuana into his office.

Stanley  was trying to enter the Constitution Avenue entrance when he went to a security checkpoint and emptied his pockets. That's when officers noticed a green leafy substance, NBC Washington confirmed.  This happened around noon Tuesday. The substance later tested positive for marijuana, according to summary report provided by the U.S. Capitol Police.

Late Wednesday, Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider confirmed that police arrested Stanley.

Zachary Coile, a spokesman for Boxer, told KSBW in Salinas that Stanley is no longer with Boxer's office and "submitted his resignation and Senator Boxer accepted it because his actions yesterday were wrong and unacceptable."

Stanley's title was staff member for the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. According to legistorm.com, he worked as a congressional staffer since 2007 and made a six-figure salary. He faces a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession.

Boxer is in a neck and neck race to retain her senate seat this fall with Republican challenger Carly Fiorina.
