A wind-driven grass fire tore through several homes Friday in the Fairfield-Cordelia area in Solano County.
The five-alarm blaze gutted two homes and several sheds and barns in a semi-rural area. The fire also temporarily closed northbound Interstate 680. Fire officials said the blaze contained at around five acres.
Heavy smoke and flames could be seen in the area due to the fire, which was reported to California Highway Patrol around 3:45 p.m. The fire first started in Fairfield and moved into unincorporated areas, according to officials.
The Fairfield Fire Department said that there were no reports of injuries. Contra Costa County, Cal Fire and Napa fire departments also helped battle the blaze.
Evacuations were ordered for homes northwest of the intersection of Cordelia and Lopez roads, according to the Solano County Sheriff's Office.
"We are encourgaing people to stay out of the area if possible," Solano County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Daryl Snedeker said at the time of the blaze. "We need the roadways for fire department people to get into and get out of in order to fight the fire."
Snedeker said that the cause of the fire is under investigation.
There were no evacuations ordered in the Fairfield area at the time of the blaze, officials said. Fire crews remained overnight to monitor hot spots and clean up the area.
