San Jose police have arrested a burglary suspect after a long police standoff at a residence Sunday afternoon, Sgt. Heather Randol said.
Police responded to a report of a burglary in progress at about 2 a.m. at a residence on the 900 block of South Second Street. When they arrived, they found a window had been broken.
Police searched the area and found the male suspect on the third-story roof. He appeared to be intoxicated and did not answer to police commands, Randol said.
The man then began to throw objects from the roof at officers and fire crews. Police used tear gas to keep him away from the windows.
He was also pepper sprayed and shot with rubber bullets. The man was arrested hours after the standoff when police convinced him to climb down a ladder, which San Jose fire set up to allow police to get on the roof.
A neighbor said the suspect had an association with the home where the standoff happened. He was possibly the gardener there.
The suspect will be booked into jail on the following charges: burglary, arson, assault with a deadly weapon, felony vandalism, and resisting arrest, according to police.
