The cost to ride one of San Francisco's iconic cable cars is going up.
The fare will increase by $1 to $6 starting July 1. The increase is part of an effort by the city's public transit agency to balance its budget over the next two years. It was approved last year by the agency's governing board.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the cable car fare was last increased in 2005, when it went up from $3.
Other fare increases will also go into effect next month although the cash price to ride city buses and streetcars will remain the same.
The city is also raising the fine for fare evasion by $25 to $100.
