Tom Cable appears to be off the hook on domestic assault charges.

Tom Cable has a lot to worry about today, with a last-place team, a no-good-options quarterback controversy, and a job security status that could charitably be described with the phrase "snowball's chance in hell."

But Cable does have one less thing to worry about. ESPN is reporting that the NFL is not likely to discipline him over allegations that he had assaulted two women in the past.

On one hand, this shouldn't be much of a surprise. It would be risky and unorthodox for an employer to discipline an employee over months-old or years-old allegations that were never prosecuted by police. And I'm not just saying that because NBC found those pictures of me partying with Michael Phelps.

On the other hand, this may already be the straw that broke Cable's back.

A Yahoo! Sports report last week indicated that Cable's firing is already a foregone conclusion,  because of these very allegations. "A source familiar with the case said," the Yahoo! report claims, at the very, very bottom of the page, "Oakland owner Al Davis is hoping to gather enough information to fire Cable with cause at the end of the season so that Davis doesn’t have to pay Cable."

So the news that Tom Cable won't be punished by the NFL is sort of a metaphor for the Raiders season. Even if it seems like good news, it's likely to result in Tom Cable losing again.
