California officials say the state will run out of cash in two months unless lawmakers act swiftly to close a widening deficit and pass a budget.
State Controller John Chiang gave lawmakers the grim news at a budget hearing yesterday.
Chiang says the state treasury will be $2.1 billion in the red in July -- and that's not including voters' rejection of five budget-related measures during Tuesday's special election. Without those measures, the deficit increases by $6 billion.
