Cargo Train Derails in San Jose, No Injuries

A cargo train covered in graffiti derailed Tuesday morning in San Jose, tipping a bit to its side, but causing no injuries.

The Union Pacific train, which normally carries rocks and gravel, derailed on East Taylor Street at North 7th Street near Gordon Biersch slightly before 10 a.m.

Traffic was stalled in the area and VTA bus lines were rerouted as crews tried to right the  train.

One fire captain said it appeared as though a wheel or axle broke off one of the cars. Fred Sanden was working near by and heard the loud boom.

"All of a sudden I heard a crash," he said, "and saw it landing on its side."
