A Bay Area man drowned Thursday while on vacation in Hawaii.

Cristian Lung, 41, died while swimming in waters off Kapa'a on the eastside of the island.

He is the 11th person to drown in Hawaii so far this year.

Police said they received a 911 call around 3 p.m. to report a swimmer who appeared to be in distress in the water next to the Plantation Hale Hotel.

Witnesses said bystanders tried to help the man, and were assisted by firefighters who brought his limp body to shore.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors could not save him, police said.

There was a high surf warning for beaches in the area at the time.

Officials continue to warn locals and tourist that the water put them at risk of injury.
