A popular Hayward middle school student collapsed on the basketball court during p.e. class Tuesday morning and later died at a hospital.
Stunned classmates watched the tragedy unfold.
The Hayward fire department says the call came in as a seizure, but by the time crews arrived just minutes later they found14 year old Pauliasi Langi unresponsive and were not able to revive him.
"We did everything we could for this young man," Hayward fire Capt. Thor Poulsen said.
Football coach Jewell Locke says Langi was a stand out athlete and hard working student.
He says high school coaches were already interested in recruiting the 8th grader to play.
Stunned family members say Langi was the youngest of ten children.
They say they can't believe the kind and respectful teen is gone.
An autopsy may reveal what caused the sudden death.
Counselors will be available at Cesar Chavez Middle School all week.
Classmates are planning to wear blue to school Wednesday in Langi's honor, it was his favorite color.
