Changing of the Shield

For the first time in nearly 40 year, BART police officers are getting new badges.

Officers have been wearing shields since 1972, but BART Police Chief Kenton W. Rainey decided for to change to a seven-point star.

BART says the star badge is commonly worn throughout Northern California by local law enforcement and is easily identifiable to the public as a police badge.

Everyone will switch out the medal this month. The list includes sworn Officers, Sergeants, Lieutenants, Deputy Chiefs and the Chief himself.
