    Dozens of people got in a good workout Sunday to honor a fallen BART officer - March 23, 2014.

    Dozens of people had good reason to get up early Sunday morning, as they got in a good workout and honored a fallen BART police officer in Union City.

    The group raised money for Sgt. Tommy Smith Jr. With a fundraising workout. Fellow officers from several local police departments were on hand for the event

    A fellow BART officer accidentally shot and killed Sgt. Smith while they were doing a probation search in Dublin in January.

    BART police have confirmed the identity of the officer who shot and killed by a fellow officer during a probation search in the East Bay last week. Jodi Hernandez reports.

    "It kind of affected the Newark department," fundraising participant Freddy Camacho said. "They have a family member who works there. Also, Hayward department and of course BART PD. We're all brothers working locally, so we decided to put the fundraiser on for the family."

    Police on Tuesday escorted the family of a fallen BART officer to the Chapel of the Chimes church in Hayward for a final visitation before Wednesday formal funeral. Jodi Hernandez reports.

    Sgt. Smith's wife and 6-year-old daughter attended Sunday's event.

    Smith was a 23-year veteran with the BART Police Department. He also served 12 years with the Moraga Police Department.
