Interstate 880 in San Leandro Reopened After Crews Clear Chemical Spill

A chemical spill on southbound Interstate 880 prompted the California Highway Patrol to close three lanes in San Leandro, snarling traffic for a few hours Tuesday morning.

CHP officers said the spill, located just before the Marina Boulevard exit, was between eight and 10 inches thick. Officials did not immediately identify the substance, although a CHP log indicated that it was gravel.

A Sig Alert was issued around 8:45 a.m. and lanes 3, 4 and 5 were cordoned off due to the spill, according to the CHP. The lanes were reopened just after 11 a.m.

No further details were immediately available.
