Chevron spokesperson apologizes to the community of Richmond for Monday's refinery fire. A small, controlled burn will continue to relieve pressure.

Gas prices in California rose Tuesday, following a fire at Chevron's massive oil refinery in Richmond the evening before.

The refinery, which processes 240,000 barrels of oil a day, shut down its crude unit following the fire, according to Bloomberg News.
As of midday Tuesday, the price of a gallon of gas gained 23 cents on futures markets, according to Bloomberg. "These increases will be passed along to retail pumps at California and gas stations as far north as Seattle," expert Bob van de Valk told the news agency.
A vapor leak of hydrocarbons began in the crude unit at about 4:15 p.m. Monday, which then increased and ignited at 6:30 p.m. burning for about five hours.
Richmond residents were told to shelter in place and some residents checked into emergency rooms complaining of breathing issues, but no injuries were reported.

People from around the Bay Area took photos of what they could see. Here is a collection of some of their images.
