Additional Child Molestation Accusations For Bay Area Baseball Coach

Joel Kaufman hit with more charges on Tuesday

A longtime Bay Area youth baseball coach pleaded not guilty to charges of child molestation, including new charges, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Joel Kaufman, 52, an Orinda resident who operates Triple Play U.S.A. batting cages in San Leandro and has coached at teams and schools throughout the Bay Area "for decades," was hit with additional charges, including allegations that he abused a third victim in the 1980s.

Kaufman was arrested last month. He was charged Tuesday with molesting one boy and "secretly filming" another in a bathroom between 2005 and 2012, the newspaper reported.

Kaufman is out of jail on $325,000 bail but remains on house arrest.

He coached at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland and at Palo Alto High, and most recently was head coach of a San Jose-based 18-and-under travel team called the California Smoke, the newspaper reported.

Investigators say that it is likely more victims are forthcoming. "More than one... new people" who say that they were victims of Kaufman's have come forward, according to deputy District Attorney Chad Mahalich.

Kaufman's attorney declined to comment.
