Classmates Mourn Loss of Livermore Skateboarder

The school community and friends of a 13-year-old Livermore boy who was killed in a skateboarding accident Tuesday afternoon are mourning the loss of the young teen at his middle school and on social media.

The 13-year-old who was killed in a collision with a pickup truck around 5:15 p.m. in a residential part of Livermore was identified as Nathan William Strube by the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

According to the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District Nathan attended Mendenhall Middle School.

School district Superintendent Kelley Bowers said in a statement Wednesday that Nathan was a child of a district staff member.

"No words can express our sadness and grief at this tragic news," Bowers said. "We are all understandably grieving."

According to Bowers, a crisis support team has been mobilized for district staff and students affected by Nathan's death.

"This is a somber reminder of just how precious life is," Bowers said.

Nathan was riding his skateboard north on Kara Place Tuesday at 5:17 p.m. and while turning onto Lomitas Avenue, he struck the side of a  pickup truck that was traveling east on Lomitas Avenue.

He was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

A Facebook page created late Tuesday night called "We will miss you Nathan Strube," states the page is dedicated to Nathan who was the unnamed page creator's neighbor.

One post by user Kicky Casey, who is in the Livermore High School network, wrote around 7:30 a.m. this morning, "U will be missed! If only u and your family can see everyone that cares! R.I.P."

Various status updates indicate that Nathan had many friends. One post referred to the teen's laid-back, fun-loving nature and it seems he was friendly with people in his physical education and academic classes as well as various summer programs.

On Twitter, user Madyson Simon wrote, "R.IP Nathan Strube you were one of my good friends ill always remember you.. thanks for making my days in core better."

Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the fatal collision, according to police who interviewed the truck driver and witnesses.
