Cleanup Begins After Thousands of Dead Fish Found in Santa Cruz Harbor

Volunteers and boat owners are working to clean up thousands of dead fish at the Santa Cruz Harbor.

Cleanup efforts will continue throughout the weekend to remove the fish, which are rotting and floating to the surface.

Marcy Liston, who owns a sail boat docked at the harbor, spent Friday helping clean the area.

"To see all these little fish upturned with bellies up -- it's very, very sad," Liston said.

On Wednesday night, a massive school of anchovies swam into the harbor. There was not enough oxygen in the water for the fish, which caused them to suffocate and die.

Crews were called to suck up the fish and haul them to a landfill. But on Friday, many of them were still floating on the harbor.
