Coast Guard Grounds Tahoe Queen Cruise Boat

The U.S. Coast Guard has grounded operations of a popular Lake Tahoe cruise boat.

Coast Guard spokeswoman Amanda Faulkner said Friday that a “no sail order'' was imposed on the Tahoe Queen for mechanical difficulties unrelated to a New Year's Day incident involving it.

She says Coast Guard investigators are looking into whether the paddle wheeler ran aground or was stalled by high winds at the end of a cruise early Thursday.

Some 200 celebrants were stranded for about two hours in sub-freezing temperatures about 200 yards from its dock in South Lake Tahoe, California.

Faulkner says the Tahoe Queen's captain initially said the boat didn't run aground, but then told Coast Guard inspectors it may have run aground.

She says the company later blamed high winds for the problem.
