Coast Guard To Lift Boat-Race Ban

2012 Spinnaker Cup could go on as planned.

The Coast Guard may lift its temporary ban on offshore boat racing in time for the 2012 Spinnaker Cup Race.

A Coast Guard captain at the Port of San Francisco tells the Marin Independent Journal the race will most likely take place as planned, on May 25.

The Coast Guard ordered open ocean waters off the bay off-limits to racing after a deadly yacht crash near the Farallon islands in April. Five crew members died in that crash.

U.S. Sailing says an independent panel will spend about a month reviewing the events that led up to the tragedy. The panel's findings and recommendations will be released in June.
