A memorial and dinner will be held Sunday in honor of a 54-year-old East Palo Alto community leader who was fatally shot in San Mateo last week, event organizers said today.
Palo Alto resident David Lewis was gunned down in the parking lot of the Hillsdale Shopping Center, located at 60 31st St., at about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
No one has been arrested in connection with the shooting, and San Mateo police Sgt. David Norris said today detectives are actively investigating the case.
"They are working very hard and they are developing new leads," Norris said, adding that he can't release additional information because it might compromise the investigation.
Friends and family have scheduled a memorial for Lewis for 2 p.m. Sunday at Costano Elementary School, located at 2695 Fordham St. in East Palo Alto.
A 5 p.m. community dinner will follow at the East Palo Alto nonprofit Free At Last, which Lewis co-founded. The organization's services include substance abuse treatment and transitional housing.
The nonprofit is located at 1796 Bay Road. Both the memorial and dinner are open to the public, according to the organization.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call the San Mateo Police Department at (650) 522-7700, the investigations unit at (650) 522-7650 or the Police Department's secret witness tip line at (650) 522-7676.
