Compare: Gulf Oil Spill Size vs. Bay Area
We've seen map after map of the Gulf Coast and areas affected so to place the size of the current oil slick in perspective I superimposed the spill area over the same scale map of the Bay Area. The result is pretty stunning. If this scenario had occured here, widespread medium and light crude will fill the entire Bay from near the inner most portions of the Delta, down through the Santa Clara Valley. Imagine the oil moving outward through the Altamont Pass and east to just south of Sacramento through Stockton, Modesto and to near Fresno. On the outer fringe, globs broken away from the main spill area would be lapping up on the west slope of the Sierra and even as far away as Lake Tahoe (coincidentally the northeast sector of the oil spill now threatening Florida). I hope this gives you a relative view of just how large this oil spill is just at the surface. The undersea plumes now doubt would expand this area even further. - Rob Mayeda
