17-Year-Old Injured After Concrete Slabs Fall on Him

A 17-year-old boy is recovering Sunday after concrete slabs fell on him while he was working a construction job in Oakland.

Construction crews hired by the homeowner were shoring up a foundation around a home near San Antonio Park, East of Lake Merritt.

According to officials at Oakland Fire, it appears that the homeowner hired a contractor to work on his property, and then the contractor hired the 17-year-old to help with the work.

"Our crews found out we had a man, approximately six feet down, who had slabs of concrete that had fallen from a foundation, pinning him against the wall," said a crew member.

It took firefighters about an hour to shore up the trench, get the concrete off the teenage victim, and pull him out.

Despite the serious injuries, he is expected to survive.
