A San Jose city official is calling for a ban on sugary drinks and whole milk.
City Councilman Ash Kalra on Wednesday will ask the council's agenda-setting committee to consider the ban, which would be in place at all city properties and events to promote healthier diets.
The proposal calls for banning all sodas -- even diet drinks -- sweetened with sugar substitutes. It also cuts sports drinks and electrolyte replacement drinks with too much added sweetener.
Fruit and vegetable drinks with added sweeteners and less than 50 percent real fruit or vegetable juice are also off the table.
Milk? Anything under 2 percent fat is considered OK under the proposed ban.
