Crews Dismantle Portion of San Francisco's Old Bay Bridge

California officials say a major portion of the old eastern span of San Francisco's old Bay Bridge began coming down this week.

By Saturday, a truss span had been be lowered onto barges but had yet to be transported to the Port of Oakland, where it will be broken apart and its scrap metal recycled. The truss spans are the sections between the towers where the roadway sat.

Crews began lowering the 504-foot truss that weighs about 2,500 tons on Thursday. It's the first of five such trusses that were built in 1935 and will have to be dismantled as part of the bridge's removal

A new east span replaced the old bridge in 2013.
