A pilot died in a plane crash in Livermore late Monday, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

The Alameda County Fire Department received reports at around 9 p.m. of a plane crash in the area of Hartford and North Livermore avenues.

The Federal Aviation Administration said a Piper PA22 plane crashed shortly after departing from the Livermore airport.

Preliminary reports from the FAA said the pilot reported control problems before crashing about three miles northeast of the airport. The fire from the crash burned a few acres and was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

Authorities said the pilot is believed to be the only person on board the plane. No other information was immediately available late Monday.
