Another Bay Area company came in second in the list of top inventions. Tesla Motors, based in San Carlos, has developed a $100,000 battery-powered sports car.

TIME Magazine announced its 8th annual list of the best inventions. Tops on the list is a personal genetic testing service by Mountain View-based 23andMe. The $399 test allows people to take a saliva sample in their home and test it to determine a their predisposition to dozens of inheritable traits or diseases.
The company was founded in 2006 by Linda Avey and Anne Wojcicki, who is the wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
Brin has publicly acknowledged his predisposition to Parkinson's Disease.

"We see health care at an inflection point, where consumers and technology can come together to make significant changes to the system. 23andMe is excited to be part of a revolution in health care."
