DUI Arrest in North Bay; Two Drivers Sent to Hospital

A San Diego man was arrested on suspicion of driving drunk after he crashed into an oncoming car while driving on the wrong way of U.S. Highway 101 near Novato early Christmas morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Champin Chen, 30, in a 2008 Mazda, was driving southbound on northbound Highway 101 near Redwood Sanitary Landfill Road just north of Novato around 4 a.m., according to CHP officials.

A 58-year-old Petaluma woman was driving in the correct direction of travel on northbound Highway 101 when the two cars came head-to-head, according to the CHP.

To avoid a collision, both drivers swerved but the right front of both vehicles collided, majorly damaging both cars, CHP officials said. Chen's Mazda came to a rest on the right-hand shoulder of the roadway while the Petaluma woman in a 2004 Nissan drove off the road and onto
the dirt center divide where the front of her car crashed into a metal guardrail, according to the CHP.

Both drivers were taken to Marin General Hospital; Chen with minor injuries, while the Petaluma woman suffered moderate injuries.

Both were wearing seatbelts, according to the CHP. After an investigation, Chen was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, officials said.
