Dance Video Memorializes Oscar Grant's Death

The death of Oscar Grant on New Year's Day 2009 is yet resonating throughout the Bay area -- emotionally, politically and artistically.

To commemorate the killing at the Fruitvale BART station, YAK Films and Turf Feinz have put together this video -- interspersed with news coverage, lo-fi beats and inspiring choreography.

"Oscar Grant's death was a tragedy that affected a lot of people in Oakland, especially youth," said Kash Gaines in a press release. Gaines is the co-founder of YAK Films who filmed the vid.

"The video is meant to be a message to everyone in Oakland about the injustices here and how we use artistic expression to deal with it. We're not providing solutions; we're just recognizing what happened and providing youth with an outlet."

During the turmoil surrounding the trial and sentencing of BART police officer Johannes Mehserle, Youth UpRising promoted peace.

"The release of this memorial video is a reminder of the fragility of young lives in Oakland," the statement reads. "And an artistic celebration of the beauty of youthful expression and possibility."
