A man is dead after trying to save two women and a child who were pulled into the ocean in Monterey by a wave.

Monterey County Sheriff's Sgt. Derrel Simpson says a mother, child and grandmother were playing in the sand on Sunday when a wave swept them into the water. The man swam out to help them but got in trouble himself.

Lifeguards and sheriff's deputies managed to pull all four from the water.

The family survived, but the man was later pronounced dead at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.

The name of the so-called "Good Samaritan" was not immediately released.
