Daylight Savings Ends This Weekend

This is the weekend you can catch up on sleep.

Everyone needs to turn their clocks back one hour overnight tonight for the end of daylight saving time.

Most of the country will turn back the clocks on Sunday at 2 a.m for the annual shift back to standard time.

Residents of Hawaii, most of Arizona and some U.S. territories don't have to change since they do not observe daylight-saving time.

Daylight saving time returns the second Sunday in March.

With that extra hour of sleep Sunday, public safety officials are urging Bay Area residents to check smoke detectors and change batteries on the devices.

While changing clocks, fire officials suggest changing the battery on all smoke detectors to keep up with fire safety at home.

Fire officials from the San Jose Fire Department said that although Sunday provides a good time for an annual battery change, residents should be testing smoke alarms monthly.

Fire officials emphasized that a working smoke alarm helps make sure families have the best chance of survival if a fire breaks out.

San Jose residents are asked to call the fire department at (408) 794-6959 if they need help purchasing a smoke detector.

For those confused about the time after "falling back" on Sunday, a Carmel Valley store is offering 10 percent discounts on clock purchases this weekend.

A portion of the proceeds from clock sales at Casa Del Soul at 13766 Center St. in Carmel Valley will go toward the Carmel Valley Angel Project. The charity provides food, clothing and other items to families in need in the Carmel Valley region during the holiday season.
